Androgen Replacement Therapy: An Overview
نویسندگان
چکیده
Men throughout recorded history have sought to preserve and enhance their virility, and have approached this in several creative ways. In antiquity, the testes were thought to be the seat of both vigor and longevity for men. Greek and Roman men consumed a substance called “satyricon,” a combination of goat and wolf testicular extracts. In the 19th and 20th centuries, there was an emergence of therapies derived from organs: consumption of thyroid extract and animal testicular extract were thought to aid in maintaining virility. In the 1930s, technology progressed and it became possible to isolate various androgens (testosterone propionate, androsterone, methyltestosterone) from animal tissue. These substances began to be applied in clinical situations (Freeman, Bloom, & McGuire, 2001). Testosterone has a complex variety of roles in male physiology. It is a common belief that testosterone in men declines with age. While this is true, there are several aspects to this decline which make it difficult to diagnose definitively, as other endocrine components can contribute to a patient’s symptoms. There are some guidelines to help determine when to begin treatment, based on laboratory assays and symptomatology. Testosterone replacement in men can improve overall quality of life, can reverse some of the effects of hypogonadism, and can be done very safely with available pharmacologic agents.

Cell-gene therapy is a dynamic constituent of novel medical biotechnology. Neurodegenerative disordersin which damage to or demise of specific brain cell types plays central role, are clear examples of diseasecandidate for cell replacement therapy. Dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons biosynthesize dopamine, a vitalneurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Due to the involveme...

PURPOSE Androgen replacement therapy has been shown to be safe and effective for most patients with testosterone deficiency. Male partners of infertile couples often report significantly poorer sexual activity and complain androgen deficiency symptoms. We report herein an adverse effect on fertility caused by misusage of androgen replacement therapy in infertile men with hypogonadal symptoms. ...

The number and magnitude of studies involving testosterone-supplementation therapy in older men are limited. In addition, many studies to date have not been blinded or controlled, were reported in abstract form only, and had involved a variety of androgen-replacement regimens and outcomes measurements. Nonetheless, an overview of the data suggests there is real potential for supplementation the...
متن کاملInterrelationship between Androgen Levels, Ageing, and Cognitive Functions
As men get older, there is a decline in functioning of many biological systems; the endocrine systems share such changes in hormone levels. Ageing in men is accompanied by progressive, but individually variable decline in serum testosterone production in healthy men especially in men over 60 years of age. Androgens determine the differentiation of male internal and external genitalia as well as...

The use of testosterone in older men, known as male hormonal replacement therapy or androgen replacement therapy, has become of increasing interest to both the medical and lay communities over the past decade. Even though the knowledge of the potential benefits and risks of male Androgen Replacement Therapy has increased dramatically, there is still much that needs to be determined. Although th...
